Edge of Eternities: To Infinity and In-Universes Beyond
Travel through space in the newest Magic the Gathering release- Edge of Eternities. This set is Magic’s first true exploration into an in-universe space theme, with characters traveling on Spacecrafts and visiting Planets (both of which feature the new mechanic Station.) Travel the multiverse in a brand new way discovering new threats and old alike.
Set Mechanics
Edge of Eternities debuts two new subtypes
-Spacecraft. Spacecrafts are a new Artifact with a Power and Toughness that need things to happen for it to be a creature (think Vehicles.) Outside of not being creatures yet they act like artifacts, take a look at the card below Wurmwall Sweeper. It costs (2) to cast and when it enters you Surveil 2. Spacecrafts also feature the new set mechanic Station which we will discuss in just a second here.
-Planet. Also being introduced is Planet, a new subtype for Lands. Planets will also include Station mechanic, gaining another ability once the requirements are met (see card below Uthros, Titanic Godcore)
-Station. Now, let's look at the Station mechanic. To “station” you need to tap an untapped creature you control. You then put charge counters on the Spacecraft of Planet equal to the power of the creature. The charge counters are what makes the cards “live.” For instance with the Wurmwall Sweeper, once it has 4 charge counters on it, Wurmwall Sweeper is a creature!
-Warp. Warp is an alternate cost for casting spells, however at the end step that warped creature exiles itself, but allows you to cast it for its normal cost on a later turn! Warp cards often have cool and interesting “enters” abilities and the mechanic also works really well with Station! (you can station the warped creature!)
-Void. Void is a mechanic that is super familiar to Revolt that we saw almost 10 years ago now (wow that made me feel old!) Void is an ability that only triggers when a nonland permanent has left the battlefield this turn or if something has warped this turn. See below Voidforged Titan, normally they’re just a 5/4 but if they see something go down (or warp in–) something happens!
-Lander. The final new mechanic to Edge of Eternities are Lander tokens. You can sacrifice Lander tokens to grab a basic land from your deck and put it into play (or ramp for short.) Note that these will also trigger your Void cards!
